Clan Mullaney
Michael Mullaney from Lancashire, England has sent the
following information on Clan Mullaney, for which we are
very grateful.
The Mullaney Clan was very active from 1992 through 2004. The first gathering was held in 1992 in Tipperary by Noreen (Mullaney) Higgins. This was a small affair at which, amongst others, Thomas Mullaney from Boyle and Brian Mullaney from Naas attended. Thomas and Brian knew each other but not Noreen so it came as a bit of a surprise that there were Mullaneys in Tipperary? It still remains a bit of a mystery how they came to be there, as the name originates in the Lough Gara area of North West Roscommon / Sligo / Mayo.
Enthused by Noreen's efforts, Thomas returned to Boyle and held
a gathering the following year (1993) with Brian and Noreen,
which was a huge success, with around 80 Mullaneys from around
the world attending. I attended the next gathering, in 1996,
again in Boyle which was the traditional homelands of the Clan.
Thomas had by now got the bit between his teeth and it was a
good gathering spread over three days.
A further gathering was held in 1999 in Boyle in which the Clan
took part in the "Return of the Wild Geese" celebration, which
also celebrated the 400th anniversary of the Battle of the
Curlieus in August 1599, in which the Mullaneys would have taken
a very active part. Thomas also launched his book "Chronicles of
the 19th Century: Roscommon and Leitrim Gazette". Again a very
successful gathering spread over a three day weekend.
In 2004 a fourth gathering was called in Boyle, but also
including Kiltimagh in Mayo - Brian's home territory, although
this part was organized by Nancy Reeb from America who has
carried out a great deal of Mayo Mullaney research. There were
plans for a gathering in 2010 but due to circumstances, it was
not to be.
As for the Newsletters etc. Noreen published issue #1 in May
2000, following the 1999 gathering. This was a small two page
newsletter which she sent out to all those who attended in 1999.
For my sins I thought that "the faithful" perhaps justified
something a bit more elaborate and whilst, heaven forbid, I
have no literary talent whatsoever, I took it upon myself to
produce something which gave them a record of their Mullaney
heritage - and so I produced newsletters 2 through 9. I
also produced a souvenir booklet for the gathering in 2004.
Sadly, there were not enough contributions forthcoming and
eventually my own material began to dry up and I decided to call
it a day in 2004.
Noreen has since married and is busy with her new family. Brian
is still very active. Thomas is still into all things Mullaney,
as well as Roscommon history, and was very big in the GAA. Nancy
Reeb is also active and about to move home to Kiltimagh. For
myself I continue to research my family history however I doubt
that I will get any further back than their Mullaney origins in
Tuam in 1775. But I still compile a great deal of data on
Mullaney and its variants from census and other records.
There are no plans to produce any more newsletters or reprint
the old ones. Perhaps Thomas will hold another gathering in the
future, but just when is not known.
Good luck with your Roscommon interest.
Michael
