The earliest surviving labels are from the mid 16th. century but it wasn’t until the 19th. century and the advent of selling directly from shelves that the need for some sort of label grew in importance. The growth in the use of lithography meant that coloured labels were capable of being produced and during the 20th. century there was an explosion in label use. Though many thousand labels would have been produced, surviving bottle labels are quite scarce*. This is our current collection. We welcome additions!
