Agriculture has always been big business in Roscommon. Even during the Middle Ages the potential for cattle and sheep on the rich limestone soil of Co. Roscommon was fully realised. At one time the county even had its own sheep breed.

Above: Silver Medal. Presented by the Irish Hereford Breeders Association to the Exhibitor of the Best Pedigree Hereford at Roscommon Show 1949. Won by Val McDonnell.

Above: (Left pair) Co. Roscommon Farming Society 1874. Presented by C. French Esq. to Cox Cotton Esq. for the best performance over stone wall - Jolly Boy. 5cm diameter. (Right pair) Royal Agricultural Improvement Society of Ireland. Awarded to William Cotton, Arm - 1843. Around the edge the medal is engraved: For the Best Five Acres of Thorough Draining in the Castlerea Farming Society. 4.5cm diameter.


Aleen Cust was Britain and Ireland first woman vet. Though denied a licence by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons she practiced in Athleague with local vet William Byrne. She died while on holiday in Jamaica on 29th January 1937 at the age of 69.
