The Gaelic Athletic Association (G.A.A.)
celebrated one hundred years of existence in 1984. This page
illustrates some of the material produced in Roscommon, Connacht and
elsewhere, to celebrate that event. This small collection is part of
our G.A.A. Archive.
In Roscommon, 1984 say the beginning of a resurgence of interest in the history of individual clubs. Club history committees began collecting material that would eventually lead to publications for almost every club in the county and in 1990 a county history was produced. Centenary year saw one publications appearing, but the following years saw many more. These are the club histories we have dating from 1984/85.
Above: Shannon Gaels (Launched June 1985), Clann na nGael (No date, probably 1985) and Roscommon Gaels Club (February 1984). Every club in Co. Roscommon held a "Lá na nGlub" or Club Day that year. We only have evidence of one - for St. Dominic's Club in Knockcroghery. We would welcome more. (If you have any more of these please contact us).
Above: Club Day Programme for St. Dominic's Club. 29 July 1984, Match Programme for Galway v. Roscommon 17 June 1984 and Official Programme for Roscommon County Finals on 9 September 1984. This is an A4 book, with history & illustrations.
Left: In 1984 the Connacht Finals were played in Pearse Stadium, Galway. A booklet was produced containing history and illustrations and a programme was inserted into it. The Senior Final was between Galway & Mayo and the Minor Final between Mayo & Roscommon.
Miscellaneous items from our collection for this celebratory year are illustrated in the column on the right. |
