The Gaelic Athletic Association.

The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) was founded in Hayes Hotel in Thurles, Co. Tipperary on 1st November 1884. Teams played in Co. Roscommon almost from the start. In 1885 a letter in "The Roscommon Herald" called for the creation of GAA Clubs in the county. By 1888 teams were active in the north of the county and it is most likely that the south was not far behind. The Parnellite split caused the movement to die down somewhat but in 1902 the GAA was reformed in the county and has survived ever since. Today Gaelic Games are one of the top sports in the county.

The preview to this match had been spectacular. Roscommon had won four Senior Connacht Titles in 1977, '78, '79 & '80 and a first National League Title in 1979. Hopes of a third All Ireland Title were high - but Kerry had other ideas!

Match Programmes - Background.

The earliest programme for a GAA match dates back to about 1913 for an All Ireland final between Kerry and Wexford. A programme also exists for a hurling match between Tipperary and Kilkenny, played at Jones's Road in November 1913. It was not until later, perhaps the 1930’s, that programmes were produced for All Ireland semi-finals. The earliest programme of Roscommon interest that we have seen dates from the early 1940’s. Early provincial final programmes do date from the 1930’s (a Munster final programme exists - Limerick v. Waterford, for 1934). County Final programmes date from the 1940’s (Tipperary - Thurles v Carrick-on-Suir, 1946) and today programmes are produced for almost every match. Programmes are collectible in themselves, some are almost miniature works of art, but they also contain much of historic and social interest. Programmes always list players, the referee, the team colours, and very often contain snippets of information on the club, the team, the players, the mentors, and much, much more.

Match Programmes. A small sample of GAA match programmes to whet the appetite. These documents are a great source of information and many are miniature works of art. Come along and have a look – you’d never know what you might find! We DO NOT have all of the programmes illustrated here. To view our own collection see the next link..
