McCrann Cup Final 1936 / 37.

McCRANN CUP FINAL - Honours Go West of Shannon

From The Westmeath Independent Newspaper of 12 June 1937.

In a game full of dash and enthusiasm, Clan na nGaedheal (sic) defeated Caulry in the final of the McCrann Cup competition at the Meadows, Athlone, on Sunday last. There was some confusion when, after the game was some short time in progress, it was found that Clan na nGaedheal had sixteen players on the pitch.

Mr. S. J. McCrann PC UDC, donor of the cup, threw in the ball and started the game amid applause. There was a fairly large attendance. The Athlone Catholic Boy-Scouts Pipe Band was in attendance and played many pleasing selections. Judging by Clan na nGaedheal's exhibition, they would, if pitted against Westmeath’s reigning senior football champions give them a game that would make G.A.A. history. They had undoubtedly the monopoly of the play, especially in the second half and Caulry combined well in their clearances.

Clan na nGaedheal were always dangerous when on the offensive. They showed a well-trained and balanced team. Caulry at the same time gave an excellent exhibition and never faltered even to the final whistle. Terry Hynes was the inspiration of his side and gave an outstanding display. Nolan kept his forwards busy and Shine proved a rare opportunist. Considering the slippery condition of the ground, the game was very fast and spectators representative of South Westmeath and South Roscommon braved the elements with cheerfulness. Nugent played a sound game for Caulry and Dolan filled his position well while the Caulry custodian showed coolness in close scrummages.

The game throughout never lacked interest and right up to the final whistle the play retained its liveliness. Clan na nGaedheal comprise a youthful team which certainly shows promise and they will yet do credit to their county. Caulry were holders of the cup, having had two sterling finals with Tubberclair. They had won it two year in succession. Full time score Clan na nGaedheal 4 – 4 Caulry 2 - 2. Sergt-Major Devine maintained his reputation as a capable and impartial referee.
