2009

Scór na nÓg and Scór Sinsear.

The GAA tries to cater for everyone and it was apparent, even to the founding fathers of the GAA, that not everyone had the aptitude for field sports. The Scór na nÓg and Scór Sinsear competitions were designed to cater for this constituency. The name Scór was given to the newly organised cultural competition by Roscommon man Phonsie Tully in 1969. In 2009 Scór celebrates it's 40 Anniversary.

From 1970 to 1973 there was only one Scór competition but from 1974 Scór Sinsear catered for those over 16 years of age and Scór na nÓg for those younger.

On 29th. August 2009 St. Dominic's GAA Club, the most successful Scór Club in Roscommon, organised a special 40th. Anniversary Celebration in St. John's Community Centre, Lecarrow. Many past Scór Champions and guests enjoyed a memorable evening of entertainment.

Scór events include dancing, singing, acting and recitation in a number of different fields. We have a fair collection of material for Scór Ros Comáin but would welcome more.

In 2005 Scór Roscommon celebrated its 35th anniversary with the publication of a 136 page publication. Illustrated with black & white and colour photographs the book tells the story of the development of Scór in the county since its inception in the 1970's.

Above, left and right are Scór na nÓg Connacht Final Programmes from the mid 1980's to the mid 1990's.

The Connacht Finals were held in Roscommon in 1986 and 1988. In recent years it has been held in the Town Hall, Claremorris, Co. Mayo.

(Above) 40th Anniversary Programmes from Roscommon (Scór na nÓg), Connaught (Scór na nÓg & Scór Sinsear) & (below right) the 2009 All Ireland Final Programme. (The All Ireland Final programme is signed by Nicky Brennan, President of the GAA. This Programme (the same as was produced in 2004, 07 & 08) is a bit disappointing as it has no reference on the cover to either of the anniversaries being celebrated in the GAA or Scór in 2009 & compared with the above, shows little in the way of imagination or novelty!).
