Michael Finneran T. D.


Michael Finneran was born in September 1947. He is married to Elizabeth (nee Walsh) and they have two sons and two daughters. He was educated at Feevagh National School and Summerhill College, Sligo. He was a Member of Roscommon County Council from 1979 to 2003, topping the poll in 1985, 1991 and 1999. He was Chairman of the General Council of County Councils in 1988 and a member of that Council from 1985 until 2003. He was a member of the Western Health Board from 1985 to 1992 and was Irish Representative on the Consultative Council to the European Commission from 1989 until 1992.

 

He was elected to Seanad Éireann in 1997 and was Government Spokesperson on Finance, a Member of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance & the Public Service and a Member of the Standing Joint Committee on Consolidation Bills, during his time in the Upper House. He was elected to Dáil Éireann for the Roscommon / Longford Constituency in 2002 and was re-elected for Roscommon / South Leitrim Constituency in 2007. He was Chairman of the Finance and Public Services Committee from 2007 to 2009 and was appointed Minister of State at the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government in May 2008.
