The Progressive Democrats Party was founded by Des O’Malley, Mary Harney, Michael McDowell and Paul Mackay in December 1985. It lasted for 23 years before being wound up in late 2008. The party ran candidates in a number of elections in Roscommon and had success at local level with Councillor Hugh Lynn winning their first seat in the Ballaghaderreen Constituency in 1999. The Party archives have been donated to U.C.D. We have a very small collection of material relating to the party in Roscommon. We would welcome further donations.
