Winter in Kilronan Parish. The famous Harpist Turlough O'Carolan is buried close to the shores of Lough Meelagh (Loch Míolach) within the grounds of Kilronan Abbey in the McDermott Roe Tomb. His surroundings inspired him to write many, now famous, tunes. Sheemore, Sheebeg is one example written after hearing fairies sing it while he was resting on one of the hills. There is a fine walk around Lough Meelagh, starting at the amenity area just outside Keadue Village. Sweat Houses, Crannógs, ancient promontory forts and other megalithic sites are found in the district. Photography by MJJM 2003. First of a set of 4 cards for sale at Arigna Mining Experience in 2003. (2PX915)

The region is producing at times of high wind, as much electricity as when the mines were in production. Photography by MJJM 2003. Second of a set of 4 cards for sale at Arigna Mining Experience in 2003. (2PX920)

Greetings from Arigna Village. Gubbrudda Iron Bridge spans the Arigna River approximately 4 km. upriver from the village. There are several attractions to tempt the adventurous traveler. Babbling brooks, winding roads, mountain views and remnants of Arigna's mining industry are around every corner. OS Map No. 26 is a good guide as The Miners Way & Historical Trails are marked Routes. 06 Greetings from Arigna Village. Coal was mined from the surrounding Hills for over 400 years until the closure of the mines in the early 1990's. Since then the area has opened its idyllic pathways, cycling trails and quiet roads to the tourist industry. The Miners Way & historical trails are fine examples of the hard work achieved by the local community, who are proud to share their local knowledge and heritage with the passing tourist. 08 Greetings from Arigna Village. (Slíabh Anierin - height 585m). Iron Mountain gets its name from the extensive iron deposits under the surface. Coal & Iron were mined here in years gone by. 09 Greetings from Arigna Village. The Coal Mining Capital of Ireland. This idyllic village has a mining history dating back to the late 1600's. During World War II Arigna coal was used to keep the wheels of industry turning in Ireland. These mines closed in 1990. The Miners Way & Historical Trails follow the paths taken by miners of times past on their way to work. These are now clearly signposted walks. 10 Greetings from Arigna Village. Crosshill is part of an old road system dating back some1500 years, linking the ancient kingdom of Connaught with the ancient kingdom of Ulster. St. Patrick is reputed to have walked this road. Much of the original route still remains to this day and can easily be retraced. Traces of the old road can be seen in the Arigna area at the horseshoe and at Greaghnaleava More to the right of Tymon's on its way to the north. Photography by MJJM 2003. Bought on 8th July 2005 in Arigna Village. (2PX919)

June 1957: No. 4T leaving Arigna Station for Derreenavoggy, Arigna, Co. Roscommon, with special of empties. Over the centuries many forms of transport helped to move coal from where it was mined to where it was used. From the 1880's the steam engines of the Cavan-Leitrim Railway burned Arigna coal and by 1920 a line connected Arigna Station to the mines. www.arignaminingexperience.ie  Copyright A.M. Davies. Bought in Arigna Mining Experience on 8th. July 2005.

Danny McPadden. Lower Rover, Arigna, Co. Roscommon, Ireland. Coping a Hutch of coal in 1990. The drover loaded the coal into a hutch and pushed it from the branch through the slope to the main straight, where it was pulled by winch out of the mine and to the weighing point. www.arignaminingexperience.ie  Copyright Derek Spiers.

Arigna Church, Derreenavoggy, Arigna, Co. Roscommon. May 1958: No 6T arrives with empty wagons from Dromod. Coal was moved from pits to the railway siding by horse and cart. This method continued in use until the 1930's when aerial ropeways were built connecting Arigna with the mines at Rover, Rockhill and Derreenavoggy. www.arignaminingexperience.ie  Copyright T.J. Edington. Bought in Arigna Mining Experience on 8th. July 2005.

Miner shovels coal into a hutch. Arigna, Co. Roscommon, Ireland. A two-man team of a "faceman" and a "drawer" were paid according to production. The drawer would leave an identifying tag on the hutch e.g. a bottle top / numbered tag, to credit the team for their production. www.arignaminingexperience.ie  Copyright Derek Spiers. Bought in Arigna Mining Experience on 8th. July 2005.

July 1990: A miner after his working day. "The narrowness of seams and the poor quality of the coal make mining here a precarious business". Robert Lloyd Pragger (sic), The Way That I Went (c. 1940). The miners job was difficult and sometimes hazardous. Their endurance of cramped conditions amazes our visitors and leaves them with a sense of almost disbelief that such work continued to as recently as 1990 when the last mine closed. www.arignaminingexperience.ie  Copyright Derek Spiers. Bought in Arigna Mining Experience on 8th. July 2005.

July 1990: Mickey Rynn, Miner 1932 - 1990. Following the closure of Irelands last coal mine in 1990, Arigna Mining Experience offers a unique opportunity to walk underground with an ex-miner and hear the fascinating story of an incredible way of life. www.arignaminingexperience.ie  Copyright Derek Spiers.
