Roscommon Postcards

In the mid-nineteenth century tourists began to collect photographs of the places that they visited. This led to an increase in the number of photographers catering for the market. Photo albums became an important part of winter evening discussions. In 1870 the Post Office issued the first plain postcards, with integral stamp (see right) and in 1894 they allowed other publishers to send their cards in the post, using adhesive stamps. Demand grew rapidly and by 1895 the "court card" was all the rage. But none of these cards were illustrated.

In 1899 the "standard" 5.5 x 3.5 inch card was produced and by 1902 the back of the card was divided in two, as it has remained to the present day. Illustrations were added around this time and the many colourful and interesting topographical cards began to appear. The rest, as they say, is history.
