Business Documents.

A business document, in contrast to business ephemera, is meant to last. These documents are intended to record transactions that will be retained, often indefinitely. Our collection consists mainly of notebooks and ledgers. We are happy to retain and protect these documents and if you have any business documents that you would like preserved, please contact us.

Three notebooks that have become disconnected from their original source. These were once part of different solicitors collections. The "Passbook" (top) has "Co. Roscommon 1929 / 30" in manuscript on the cover and "Mr. Tom Keaveney, Cappagh" in manuscript on the first page. The book contains lists of foodstuffs and prices and an ink stamp: Saorstat Eireann No. 4 Western **? "in evidence" 14 June 1933, on the page after the last entry. The brown "Cash Book", (lower left), has "Rev. Mr. Casey CC, Ruskey" in manuscript on the cover and contains lists of foodstuffs and prices, beginning in 1939 and ending ca. 1942. These notebooks are useful primary sources for anyone trying to work out the price of various foods during the 1930's and 40's. The third notebook, (bottom right), has the name "Mrs. Kate Murray, Sheeppark, Gallowshill, Athlone" and begins in 1934. It appears to be a weekly rent book and continues up to 1936.

The three books (left) are Credit Books belonging to Mrs. Mary Oates (shopkeeper) of Lanesboro Street, Roscommon. The shop opened at about the same time as the local V.E.C. School and provided school books, pencils and other requisites to the students, and general merchandise to the locals. As was common practice at the time credit was offered, and these books are the credit records for the years 1959 to 1961, 1962 to 1967 and 1968 to 1975. These items are on permanent loan from Ms. Mary Nally, to whom we express our sincere thanks.
