Calendars

The early name for a calendar was "almanac" and the two words have been used to describe a printed indicator of days since the fifteenth century. Various types and forms were used over the years, including two sided printing, book form and even a circular calendar, produced  in Scotland in 1837.

Among the calendars functions, apart from dividing time into convenient intervals, was to list days of religious significance - holidays, saints days, anniversaries etc. The rectangular layout came into use in the 1870's though many different forms have been tried. By the 1880's colour pictures were being offered by the printing houses for use with calendars. The success of the medium eventually led to the multi-page glossy hanging calendar with spiral or comb binding and by the 1960's the advertising calendar had become the focus of much attention because of it's year-long display.
