In 2009 the Herald celebrates it's 150 Anniversary. This is the masthead decoration for the first issue of 2009.

Images are not to scale.

The first Roscommon Herald newspaper hit the streets of Boyle, Co. Roscommon on 30th. April 1859. It's title was "The Roscommon Herald and Boyle and Leitrim News". It consisted of eight pages of six columns per page. The proprietor was George M Tully and the paper was produced from offices at The Crescent in Boyle. When George M. Tully died the paper was taken over by his widow who ran it for a number of years until her on her death, her son, Jasper, returned from the US and took over.

Jasper Tully was born in 1858 and was a larger than life figure in Boyle, Roscommon and further afield. He used his newspaper to drive local issues, including the development of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), Irish nationalism and politics. He was MP for Boyle.

Following Jasper Tully's death in 1938 the paper was purchased by a partnership of P. J. Nerney, C. E. Callan and J. T. O'Hanrahan.

These would have been fixed inside a wire "cage" on the front of the newsstand, and similar posters are still used in some places today.

The paper expanded and developed until 1965 when a fire at the premises in St. Patrick's Street almost destroyed it and this was compounded by the sudden death of one of the Directors, Paddy Nerney. Paddy Nerney's wife Lillie took over the day to day running of the paper after her husbands death and the paper continued to develop and expand. In March 2004 the paper was sold to Thomas Crosbie Holdings, a major newspaper producer in Ireland.
