Maurice Mahon (Lord Hartland) of Strokestown - 1810.

A letter from Maurice Mahon (1738 - 1819) 1st Baron Hartland to his agent George Kelly dated 2nd December 1810.

The letter appears to reads as follows:

Strokestown Dec 2d 1810

Dear Sir

I was this day favord with your letter and am sorry to find that there is a clause of preemption in the lease from Mr. J. Dillon to Mr. Span which destroys our bargain relative to it, but if Mr. B. Mahon will be satisfied to sell it lyable to the penalty viz £10 yearly and the £20 yearly making together £30 yearly I shall be satisfied to buy it at that rent.

As to Mr. Hoggs lease I was warned by Mr. B. Mahon not to buy it, but he has since waived his intention of breaking it, I was not served with any written notice of his intention to break it, it was only a verbal one by Mr. Thos Conry, but I understand it is settled by him .. on his children. If Mr. Jayr Ball can be satisfied as to the title, I should like to buy it, but not otherwise.

Mr. Thos Birmingham writes to me that he has my note for £200 with interest on it since 17th April 1809 and that it will fall due on 12th instant, I have referred him to you and when he has signed the release you may give him an order on La Touche & Co. on my acct which I will desire them to honour. I suppose I did not pay it to the Revd. Richd Birmingham, did I?

Have you Costellos lease to Hugh Nuhiny of part of Ballykilcline and the papers I gave you with it, or did you return them to me?

Mrs Mary Hughes, wife to Henry Hughes Esqr. has written to me offering the purchase of her estate in Ballyfiney alias Fairbank to me. Do you know how much J Ferrall offerd for it at the last sale by the courts? I should be glad to purchase it as it lyes near my demesne if I can get it reasonable.

I am Dear Sir

Your very humble servant

Hartland.

Geo Kelly Esqr.

My thanks to Joe Mooney for the translation.
