This is the home page for our postal collections. Pre-history, they say, is the time before the written word and the arrival of Christianity is said, in Ireland, to herald the arrival of "history". Letters from this early date are obviously scarce and valuable documents and even if we had some we would find it difficult to ascribe them to "Roscommon", as the division of the country into counties was a long way in the future, at that stage. But letters they were, none the less.

Surviving examples of early letters from Ireland are rare. The Irish were not ones to keep their correspondence, unfortunately, and when they did, they had the knack of burning them, on a regular basis, either maliciously, (as at the very start of the foundation of the modern State when both sides conspired to destroy almost 1000 years of Irish history, including many letters, in one moment of pure madness), or by accident!
