Telecommunications Heritage.

In 2009 Eircom, the national landline service provider, decided to remove the public phone kiosks from many of the towns and villages in Co. Roscommon. This controversial move followed the almost silent withdrawal of the service from most of the smaller villages over the preceding years. We noticed that the kiosks in Ballymurray and Brideswell are gone, but what other ones have been removed? Do you know, please let us know so that we can do a list. The decision to discontinue the public phone service was taken, according to Eircom, because of the widespread use of mobile phones!

We decided to photograph the surviving installations before they disappeared and we were shocked by the number of phone kiosks that we found had already gone! Below we have illustrated some of the surviving phone kiosks of Roscommon, as they looked in early 2009. By the end of this year many of these may be gone?

(We have also included some Smart Telecom Kiosks. These (so far as we are aware) are NOT under threat).

If you have a photograph of any of the box's that have already been removed please send us a copy.
