The Earl of Kingston


The Earl of Kingston is a title in the Peerage of Ireland. It is associated with the titles: Viscount Kingston (1766), Viscount Lorton (1806), Baron Kingston (1764) and Baron Erris (1800). The title was created in 1768 for Edward King, 1st Viscount Kingston. He had already succeeded his father as fifth Baronet of Boyle Abbey and been created Baron Kingston of Rockingham in 1764 and Viscount Kingston in 1766. The Baronetcy of Boyle Abbey had been created in 1682 for Robert King. He was the younger brother of John King, 1st Baron Kingston (a title which became extinct in 1761). Sir Robert's grandson, Sir Robert King, 4th Baronet of Boyle Abbey was created Baron Kingsborough in 1748. This title became extinct on his death. He was succeeded in the baronetcy by his younger brother, Sir Edward King, 5th Baronet, for whom the barony of Kingston was revived in 1764. His son, the second Earl, represented County Cork in the Irish House of Commons. He was succeeded by his son, the third Earl. He was created Baron Kingston of Mitchelstown in County Cork in 1821. This title became extinct on the death of his younger son, the fifth Earl, in 1869.

General the Hon. Robert Edward King, younger son of the second Earl of Kingston, was created Baron Erris and Viscount Lorton in 1800 and 1806 respectively. His son, the second Viscount, succeeded to the earldom of Kingston in 1869.

Henry Ernest Newcomen King-Tenison, 8th Earl of Kingston (1848-1896).

Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Ernest Newcomen King-Tenison, 8th Earl of Kingston was born on 31st July 1848, the younger son of Robert King, the 6th Earl of Kingston and Anne Gore-Booth. Born as Henry Newcomen King, he was educated at Rugby School in Warwickshire. He served in the 5th Battalion, Connaught Rangers, reaching the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He succeeded to his brother Robert Edward's titles in 1871. On 23 January 1872, he married the daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel Edward King-Tenison of Kilronan Castle, Co. Roscommon, in St James's in Westminster. After his marriage his name was changed to Henry Newcomen King-Tenison by Royal Licence on 10 March 1883. From 1887 to 1896 he was Representative Peer for Ireland in the House of Lords and from 1888 to 1896 Lord Lieutenant of Roscommon. He died on 13th January1896, aged 47, in Cairo.
