Excerpt From The Strokestown Democrat 21 July 1923

 The Feis

A raised platform, neatly decorated and bearing a streamer across the front with the words “Céad Míle Failte” in Gaelic characters was erected one side of the sports arena for carrying out the Feis Programme. The attempt at holding the Feis was on a light scale being only thought of a few weeks ago. Mr. M. Gaughan, Gaelic Teacher was principally responsible for its organisation and deserves to be congratulated on the success that crowned his efforts. He presented at his own expense two medals, a gold and a silver one, for the best hornpipe and reel dancers. The Reverend Father MacBranain, Mantua, opened the proceedings and received a great ovation. An interesting feature was the number of children dressed in the ancient Irish costume. The following is the result of the different competition held at the Feis in the Sports Grounds, Strokestown on Sunday last ....

The Gaughan Medals

The Gold medal offered by Mr. M. Gaughan, Irish teacher for the best hornpipe dancer was won by James Ryan, Lismely, Strokestown, Mr. Ryan is a beautiful dancer and well deserves the trophy. The silver medal, for the best reel dancer, afforded by the same gentleman for juniors, goes to Frenchpark. The medals, which are of a beautiful design and workmanship were made by Messrs. Hopkins, O’Connell Street, Dublin.
