Boyle.

Boyle often claims to be the Cinderella of Co. Roscommon - often overlooked. The town and area have not been forgotten however, and if the publicity for the area is anything to go by then there are a lot of people working hard to make it the "beautiful princess".

Boyle is situated in the north of the county, nestling under the Curlew Mountains and within easy reach of beautiful Lough Cé (or Lough Key). It has a rich history, which we hope to bring you in time. Meanwhile, if you are in the area, please stay a while.

Most of the material illustrated on this page is available from Boyle Tourist office or from Úna Bhán shop, both located in the grounds of King House.

Two books about Boyle by Moylurg Writers.

Cyril Mattimoe's history of North Roscommon is now out of print and quite scarce. It is one of the definitive works about the area.

Other books to watch out for are:

"The Annals of Lough Cé" by William Hennessy 1871.

"The History of Ireland from The Annals of Boyle" by John D'Alton 1845 (2 volumes)

"Loch Cé And Its Annals" by Very Rev. Francis Burke 1895

All of these originals are now quite rare. The Annals of Lough Cé was reprinted recently by deBurca Rare Books in Dublin.

A Walking Tour of Boyle, for the energetic. Boyle also boasts driving and cycling routes and water sports, including river and lake fishing, cruising (Boyle is connected with the Shannon for cruisers), boating, sailing and all types of water sports.

"Discover Boyle ..." is a new collection of leaflets discussing all aspects - social, tourism and commercial, of Boyle, produced in 2007. "Boyle. The Complete Guide" was an earlier version of the same, in book form, produced around 2003.

There is no shortage of leaflets and booklets showing off the social, tourism and commercial aspects of Boyle. Most of these are available from the local tourist office. This is a small example from our collection.

We would like to have older examples of any of the illustrated material in our collection. If you have  examples of such material from Boyle or the area surrounding it, and would like to give it a good home, please contact us.

There are two free newsletters available in Boyle. One is "Boyle Community News"  and the other "Úna Bhán Newsletter". Both have been going strong for a number of years.
