St. John's Parish Heritage Group was formed in 2002 to promote research into local heritage issues and to organise the restoration of sites of local historical significance, within the parish of St. John's, which is part of the modern parish of Knockcroghery, St. John's & Rahara, in South Roscommon. Meetings are held every month in St. John's Community Centre, Lecarrow.

To achieve its aims the group organises lectures on historical issues, undertakes heritage initiatives, collects material for publication and collects funds towards these purposes. To date the group has achieved the following:

  • Lectures & talks of local interest.

  • Access to and maintenance of Kilcommon Old Graveyard. Planting of trees and flowers. Erection of memorial marker to those who have no headstone.

  • Access to and maintenance of St. John's Old Catholic Graveyard. Planting of trees and flowers.

  • Access to and maintenance of St. John's Old Protestant Graveyard. Planting of trees and flowers.

  • Archaeological Report on "The Stones", Lecarrow.

  • The erection of Townland Marker Stones.

  • Publication of "The Rindoon Journal" Volume 1, 2 & 3.

  • Design a Christmas Card Competition.

  • Help with the organising and running of Lecarrow Pattern Mass.

  • Organising of walks in St. John's Wood & guided visits to Rindoon.

  • Heritage Week: Schools Project and Historical Document Display.

  • Heritage Week (2010): Community "Medieval Festival". Heritage Council Award winner.

  • Supervising conservation work on Rindoon Town Walls and Towers & on Parish Church at Rindoon.

  • Conservation work on St. John's Hospital and Rindoon Windmill.

  • Development of Meeting Room in St. John's Community Centre.

  • Development of a Heritage Walk at Rindoon.

  • Hosting Heritage Week 2011 "Viking Event" at Rindoon.

Other current projects include:

  • Fieldnames survey of Parish.

  • Recording local ghost stories.

  • Recording the local music tradition.

  • Setting up a Field Club.

Richard Collins accepts the "Best Event Organised by a Community Group" Award from the Chairman of The Heritage Council, on behalf of St. John's Parish Heritage Group, in Kilkenny in February 2011. The Group was also accorded a Civic Reception by Roscommon County Council on account of it's success.

St. John's Parish Heritage Group welcomes new members. Meetings are held in the Group's Meeting Room, upstairs in St. John's Community Centre, (usually) on the first Wednesday of each month at 8 pm.
