1940's Social in Roscommon? The name Curraghroe is found in a townland near Loughrea in Co. Galway and in a townland in the parish of Lisonuffy, near Ballyleague, in Co. Roscommon. Situated on the Ballyleague to Scramoge Road (R371), the barracks was a big house at the junction of this road with the road to Doughill. We believe the house was once known as Sullivan's! Is this where the party was held? Saturday, according to the universal calendar, fell on 6th. January in 1934, 1940, 1945 and 1951. The material found with this ticket (though NOT from Roscommon), dated to the years of the Second World War, or "The Emergency" as it was known in Ireland. Therefore we are going for a 1940 or 1945 date for the dance? If anyone can tell us anything about this function, we would be delighted to hear from them. Just contact us.
Booklet by "William O'Brien (Shades of)" from Hollywell, Roscommon. 30th. August 1948. The publication was produced "in response to numerous requests I publish this booklet" and consists of a number of "Letters to the Editor of The Champion" sent during 1947 and 1948. The letters are titled "Roscommon Land Agitation", "Roscommon Land Division", "Roscommon Land Query" "Land Division: Emigration" & "Land Division Finance: Emigration". The last letter, dated 28 August 1948 mentions the Goodall Estate and lands at Coolteigue and Hollywell and the last page (of our damaged copy) has "Cloonmurly Farm" as the heading! Our copy is missing the cover and at least one page (page 19). Does anyone have a copy of the original to provide us with a photocopy of the final pages? Can anyone tell us anything about the author or the events mentioned? If you can help, please contact us.
